To maintain financial transparency, taxpayers in India must declare their income, tax payments, and applicable deductions through a form known as the Income Tax Return (ITR). There are seven distinct variations of this form, labeled ITR-1 through ITR-7. Selecting the correct version depends heavily on the taxpayer’s income sources, total earnings, and residential classification.

For the Financial Year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26), the filing deadline for cases not requiring a tax audit is set for September 16, 2025. It is critical to adhere to this timeline, as missing the deadline can result in penalties, interest on delayed payments, and the forfeiture of the right to carry forward losses.

Understanding Income Tax Returns

The Income Tax Return (ITR) serves as a formal submission to the Income Tax Department, detailing a taxpayer’s earnings and tax liabilities. The specific form required varies based on whether the entity is an individual, a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), or a company, as well as the nature and quantum of their income.

Categories of ITR Forms

The authorities have categorized ITR forms into seven types to cover different taxpayer profiles:

ITR Form Applicable Taxpayers
ITR-1 (Sahaj) Resident individuals earning up to Rs. 50 lakh from salary, a single house property, specific capital gains, and other sources (excluding business/profession).
ITR-2 Individuals and HUFs without business income but holding capital gains, foreign assets/income, directorships, unlisted shares, or income exceeding Rs. 50 lakh.
ITR-3 Individuals and HUFs earning income from a business or profession, including those not choosing presumptive taxation.
ITR-4 (Sugam) Individuals, HUFs, and firms (excluding LLPs) that opt for the presumptive taxation scheme.
ITR-5 Specifically for firms, LLPs, AOPs, BOIs, local authorities, and artificial juridical persons.
ITR-6 Companies not claiming Section 11 exemptions. This form must be filed electronically.
ITR-7 Entities such as trusts, political parties, and colleges claiming exemptions under Section 139(4A) through 139(4D).
