The GST portal is India’s unified online platform for managing all Goods and Services Tax compliance activities. This guide covers portal registration, login procedures for first-time and returning users, and a breakdown of every service available before and after authentication.

What Is the GST Portal?

The GST portal at www.gst.gov.in is the central government platform for all GST-related activities. It eliminates the need for physical visits to CBIC offices by enabling electronic filing, payments, and communication with tax authorities. Key functions include GST registration, return submission, tax payments, refund requests, and responding to official notices.

The portal serves as the single point of interaction between taxpayers and the government for indirect tax compliance. All GST processes, from initial registration to annual return filing, are handled on this platform, making it essential for every registered business in India.

How to Register for GST

To register on the portal, visit gst.gov.in and submit a registration application with all required documents and information. Upon successful submission, you receive an acknowledgement number for your GST login. A GST officer verifies the application and assigns a GSTIN. You receive a username and can set your password for the official GST account. For detailed steps, refer to the GST registration process guide.

Services Available Before Login

The GST portal provides several features without requiring authentication.

The Services tab offers registration (apply for new GST registration), payments (generate challans, remit payments, track payment status), user services (HSN code search, holiday lists, locate GST Practitioners, verify RFN), refunds (monitor refund application progress), the e-way bill system (access the dedicated e-way bill portal), and application status tracking.

The GST Law tab provides links to CBIC and state/UT commercial tax department websites for CGST/SGST Acts, rules, notifications, amendments, and circulars.

The Downloads tab includes offline tools for filing GST returns and for generating GST statistics, with historical filing trend data for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

The Search Taxpayer feature lets you locate taxpayers using GSTIN/UIN, verify details linked to a PAN, identify composition dealers, and search temporary IDs.

The Help and Taxpayer Facilities tab provides how-to guides, system requirements, user manuals, video tutorials, FAQs, the grievance redressal portal, and lists of GST Suvidha Providers.

Click the password reset link in the email you used to register. Set a new password following the portal’s security requirements. Log in with your username and new password. Complete any additional verification steps (OTP, Aadhaar authentication) as prompted by the portal.

For returning users, log in directly with your username and password. If you forget your credentials, use the Forgot Password or Forgot Username option on the login page and follow the verification steps using your registered email or mobile number.

Electronic Ledgers on the GST Portal

The portal maintains three critical ledgers that taxpayers should reconcile monthly with their internal accounts.

The Electronic Liability Ledger shows tax payable by the assessee. Liabilities can only be settled by offsetting against the Credit or Cash Ledger. The Electronic Credit Ledger displays available Input Tax Credit that can be used to offset output tax liabilities. The Electronic Cash Ledger records tax payments made via challans, and the balance is available to settle liabilities from the Liability Ledger.

Monthly closing entries are necessary to ensure internal accounts align with the portal’s electronic ledgers. Any discrepancies between the ledgers and your books of accounts should be resolved before filing GSTR-3B for the period.

Additional Homepage Features

The portal homepage includes several additional sections. The News and Updates section presents the latest GST developments, including revised due dates and system enhancements. The Register/Find Taxpayer section provides quick access to registration and search tools. Popular Help Topics covers FAQs on refunds, the composition scheme, and common queries. The Upcoming Due Dates section displays forthcoming GST return deadlines and filing date changes.
