The GST Council plans a single tax rate per product category to simplify the system and minimize classification disputes.
Anticipated Uniformity in GST Rates to Ease Complexity
The GST Council was scheduled to convene on May 18-19 to determine the final tax rates applicable to various goods and services. Industry experts suggest that the Council is likely to avoid implementing differing tax rates within the same product group. This approach aims to prevent additional complications within the tax system. Currently, Value Added Tax (VAT) rates vary significantly for identical products across different Indian states, posing a substantial challenge for businesses.
Establishing consistent tax rates is expected to mitigate classification conflicts and reduce the number of legal disputes. Consequently, both industry leaders and tax professionals express optimism that the Council will endorse uniform tax rates for specific Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes, rather than basing the tax levy on the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of commodities.
