FASTag is India’s electronic toll collection system that uses Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for contactless toll payments at highway plazas. Managed under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), FASTag is linked to a prepaid wallet or bank account and enables automatic toll deduction as vehicles pass through toll plazas equipped with FASTag readers. Over 30 banks, including SBI, ICICI, and HDFC, issue FASTag, making it the standard toll payment method across India.

What Is FASTag?

FASTag is an RFID-enabled sticker affixed to the windscreen of a vehicle. When the vehicle approaches an RFID-equipped toll plaza, the scanner reads the tag’s unique identification number, verifies the linked account, and automatically deducts the applicable toll amount. The entire transaction takes seconds, eliminating the need for cash payments and reducing congestion at toll plazas.

The system operates under the NETC program administered by NPCI. FASTag was introduced in 2014 and became mandatory for all national highway toll plazas from February 16, 2021. Vehicles without a valid FASTag are required to pay double the toll amount at designated cash lanes.

How Does FASTag Work?

The FASTag system involves three key components: the RFID tag on the vehicle, the RFID reader at the toll plaza, and the backend payment processing system managed by NPCI.

Tag activation. When a FASTag is purchased from a bank or authorised dealer, it is linked to the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) number. The issuing bank then activates the tag after verifying the vehicle details and completing KYC documentation.

RFID detection. As the vehicle enters the dedicated FASTag lane at a toll plaza, the overhead RFID reader scans the tag. The reader captures the tag’s unique ID and sends it to the central processing system for verification.

Payment processing. The system verifies the tag status (active or blocklisted), checks the linked wallet or bank account balance, and deducts the applicable toll amount. A confirmation SMS is sent to the registered mobile number with the transaction details, including the toll plaza name, amount deducted, and remaining balance.

Failed transactions. If the tag is damaged, the wallet balance is insufficient, or the tag is blocklisted, the transaction fails. The vehicle is directed to a cash lane where a double toll is charged. Repeated failed transactions may result in the tag being flagged for review.

How to Get a FASTag

FASTag can be obtained through multiple channels, depending on convenience:

•  Bank branches and POS outlets. Visit any NETC member bank branch or authorised Point of Sale outlet with your vehicle RC, driving licence, and passport-size photograph

•  Online portals. Apply through the IHMCL website (www.ihmcl.com), the NPCI portal, or your bank’s online portal

•  Mobile apps. Purchase through the My FASTag app, Paytm, Google Pay, PhonePe, or your bank’s mobile application

•  Amazon and Flipkart. FASTag is available for purchase on e-commerce platforms with home delivery

After purchase, the tag must be affixed to the centre of the vehicle’s windscreen (inside, upper portion) for proper RFID detection.

Auto-recharge is recommended for frequent travellers. This feature automatically adds funds to the FASTag wallet when the balance drops below a preset minimum, ensuring the tag never runs out of balance during transit.

KYC Verification for FASTag

KYC (Know Your Customer) verification is mandatory for all FASTag accounts. Without KYC, the tag operates with limited transaction capabilities.

Minimum KYC allows a maximum wallet balance of Rs. 10,000 and limited monthly transactions. It requires basic details like name, mobile number, and vehicle RC.

Full KYC enables a maximum wallet balance of Rs. 1,00,000 and unlimited transactions. It requires submission of identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN, or passport), address proof, vehicle RC copy, and a passport-size photograph.

KYC can be completed at the issuing bank’s branch, through the bank’s online portal, or via video KYC offered by some banks. Non-KYC FASTag accounts that exceed the transaction limit will be blocked until verification is completed.

One Vehicle, One FASTag Rule (February 2025)

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) introduced the one vehicle, one FASTag rule effective from February 2025. Under this regulation, each vehicle can have only one active FASTag linked to it. If multiple FASTags are found linked to the same vehicle number, all duplicate tags are automatically deactivated, retaining only the most recently issued or most recently recharged tag.

This rule addresses the issue of multiple active FASTags, which create confusion in toll deduction records and complicate refund processes. Vehicle owners with deactivated duplicate tags must contact their issuing bank to resolve the issue and ensure only one valid tag remains active.

FASTag Balance Check and Statement

Vehicle owners can check their FASTag balance and download transaction statements through several methods:

•  SMS. Send BALANCE to the issuing bank’s designated SMS number

•  Missed call. Give a missed call to the bank’s FASTag balance inquiry number

•  Mobile app. Check balance through the My FASTag app or the issuing bank’s app

•  NETC portal. Log in to http://www.netc.org.in with your vehicle number or tag ID

•  Customer care. Call 1033 (NHAI helpline) or the issuing bank’s toll-free number

Transaction statements can be downloaded in PDF format from the bank’s portal or the NETC website. These statements are useful for expense tracking, GST Input Tax Credit claims on toll expenses (for GST-registered businesses), and reconciliation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Is FASTag mandatory for all vehicles in India?

FASTag is mandatory for all four-wheeled vehicles and above at national highway toll plazas. Vehicles without a valid, active FASTag are charged double the toll amount at cash lanes. Two-wheelers and three-wheelers are currently exempt from the FASTag requirement.

Q2: How long is a FASTag valid?

A FASTag is valid for 5 years from the date of issuance. After expiry, the vehicle owner must purchase a new FASTag from an authorised issuer and link it to their vehicle. The balance from the expired tag can be transferred to the new tag through the issuing bank.

Q3: What happens if my FASTag balance is insufficient at a toll plaza?

If the wallet balance is insufficient to cover the toll amount, the transaction fails. The vehicle is directed to a cash lane, where the owner must pay double the toll. To avoid this, set up an auto-recharge linked to your bank account.

Q4: Can I transfer my FASTag to a different vehicle?

No. Each FASTag is linked to a specific vehicle’s Registration Certificate number and cannot be transferred to another vehicle. If you sell or change your vehicle, you must close the old FASTag account and purchase a new tag for the new vehicle.

Q5: What is the one vehicle, one FASTag rule?

Effective February 2025, each vehicle can have only one active FASTag. Duplicate tags linked to the same vehicle number are automatically deactivated. Vehicle owners must contact their issuing bank to ensure only one valid tag remains active.
